What is Firefox?
Firefox is a web browser alternative to Internet Explorer.
Why should I use Firefox?
Over the years, Internet Explorer has become the target of spyware companies, viruses makers, and script kiddies alike. Firefox is immune to most of these issue due to its improved security model and lack of ActiveX. It's true that the latest Internet Explorer (the one that comes with Windows XP after you upgrade to Service Pack 2) is probably as secure as Firefox, assuming it's configured correctly. However, there are other benefits to Firefox:
Popup Blocking
Stop annoying popup ads in their tracks with Firefox's built in popup blocker.
Tabbed Browsing
View more than one web page in a single window with this time saving feature. Open links in the background so that they're ready for viewing when you're ready to read them.
Extensions
Extensions are add ons that enhance Firefox. You only have to install the ones you want. This makes the browser less bloated with features you will rarely (or never) use.
Are there any extensions I should install by default?
That's a matter of opinion. You won't need any extensions to do all of the normal things a web browser does. However, there are some extensions that will greatly enhance just about everyone's experience on the Internet. For that reason, I'd recommend that you use the following:
Adblock http://adblock.mozdev.org/
Googlebar http://googlebar.mozdev.org/
Tabbrowser Preferences http://216.55.161.203/theonekea/tabprefs/
If you use Yahoo! Mail, Hotmail, or MyWay mail:
eWebMail - Color and Graphics http://patsis.brownhost.com/extxpi.html
If you want to use an external download manager like Free Download Manager, Aria, or Speed Download:
FlashGot http://www.flashgot.net/
How do I download and install Firefox?
Step 1: Go to http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/ and download the installer.
Step 2: Install Firefox with all the default settings. You will have the option after installation to import all of your Internet Explorer "Favorites" (now called "Bookmarks"), cookies, home page, etc. into Firefox.
Step 3: Install Googlebar.
Step 3a: Go to http://googlebar.mozdev.org/ and click on the link to install Googlebar.
Step 3b: You will get a message bar on the top of your browser: "To protect your computer, Firefox prevented this site (googlebar.mozdev.org) from installing software on your computer." This is Firefox ensuring that a malicious extension writer can't install something on your browser without your explicit approval. To the right of the top bar, you will see a button called "Edit Options..." Click it and then click the "Allow" button. Then click "OK".
Step 3c: Click the Install link again. This time you get a popup to install the extension since it's no longer blocked. Click the "Install Now" button.
Step 3d: A screen will appear listing all of the extensions on your computer. Extensions usually don't work until you restart Firefox, so a little message will be under the extension alerting you to that fact. Close your browser and open it again; you should see a new toolbar for Google.
Step 4: Get rid of the old Google search bar.
Step 4a: Go to View, Toolbars, Customize...
Step 4b: A window will appear with toolbar icons. Drag the old Google search bar into this window. It should disappear from your normal toolbar.
Step 5: Install Adblock.
Step 5a: Go to http://adblock.mozdev.org/dev.html and click on the "Adblock 0.5 d2 nightly 39" link.
Step 5b: Follow steps 3b - 3d to complete installation of this extension.
Step 6: Configure Adblock.
Step 6a: Go to http://www.geocities.com/pierceive/adblock/ and download the most recent text file.
Step 6b: Go to Tools, Adblock, Preferences.
Step 6c: Click "Adblock Options" button and choose "Import filters..." Select the text file you just downloaded. Confirm the import by clicking "OK" when the dialog box appears. Click "Done" to finish.
Step 7: Install Tabbrowser Preferences.
Step 7a: Go to http://216.55.161.203/theonekea/tabprefs/ and scroll down until you find the link to the latest release.
Step 7b: Follow steps 3b - 3d to complete installation of this extension.
Step 8: Configure Tabbrowser Preferences.
Step 8a: Go to Tools, Options, Tabbed Browsing. Make sure "Load links in:" and "Load external links in:" are both set to "New Tab." In the options under "Tab Focus," make sure "Load middle-clicked URLs in new tabs" is checked off. Click "OK" to finish.
The other optional extensions I mentioned are installed the same way. Just refer back to Step 3 if you haven't mastered installing extensions by now. |
