Before I continue, I will say that you do not need to go out on a limb and label this particular argument as "unnecassary(sic)" or "stupid". Because every argument that has ever been argued is already both those things by default. Arguing in general is just unnecessary and very stupid. You, like many others, may consider some conservative, pompous, rich asshole, and some liberal, pompous, rich asshole on the television screeching at each other about gay marriage an important argument, but nothing gets solved by this argument, and before anyone is proven wrong or changes their idea, the newscaster will quickly step in, long before anything of importance is said, and tell them that a commercial break is required. It has happened a million times before and it will continue to happen everyday on news broadcastings around the country.
Arguing is really just a fun thing to do. You mean to tell me that you are having no fun in the competitiveness going on here? You don't long for the sporting chance of making me look like a dumbass while I try to do the same to you? If not, then why have you taken this so far? Why have you not yet taken out the bullshit "opinion" card as of yet and moved on? Could it be that you're in some sick way enjoying yourself? Shit, I know I am. Anyway, moving on...
I don't know how to explain this, but not every band is in this "music business". Well, their heart isn't in it anyway. I'm actually a bit insulted that people can sum up music as just a business. Most bands make money from touring, selling CD's and merchandise by default, and that can be considered a business, but unless they are giant, it does not add up to very much money. In order to live an "MTV Cribs" lifestyle, or "make it" as a lot of bands like to say, (an also very disgusting phrase), the group needs to market themselves. In movies, television, commercials, whatever. Godsmack does market themselves as such, and because of that, they currently are living a high life, and probably will be the rest of their days.
But music is not meant to be one's money maker. It's not meant to be just some business like McDonald's. It's meant to be an art, a hobby, a leisure. Something that people can enjoy. A band should be making music for themselves and their fans, not making the music for the fan's money, or a sponsor's money. That should be the last thing a musical group should be interested in. It's why I get so pissed when I see these douchey faggots like Lars Ulrich crybaby about file-sharing. They don't care if someone is out there enjoying their music, they just care whether or not they're getting that person's money.
If what you have in mind with this band you're playing in is "making it" and achieving that "MTV Cribs" life-style, all I can say is it is a very poor philosophy to have in the creation of music, and one I don't even think you truly have. If you do feel that way, I highly suggest a change in heart, as it will harm your artistic freedom and overall, dignity.
As for the Pantera/Exhorder comparison, I can't see much of a connection there either. Spidey (sorry to have you now involved in this) probably isn't as familiar with Alice In Chains due to the fact they are from a generation of music a little before our time. Godsmack, however, are from our generation, and the way I see it, they are recycling AIC's sound in order to capitalize off of their former fame. I can't come out and say Sully Erna and the rest of his group are purposefully stealing AIC's style because they know it will make them money, because I can't read their minds.
However, Godsmack is a decent, successful band, and people seem to love them. They're all over the media in movies, TV, commercials, video games, and they have all this fame and success. The reason that I detest this band is that they did not achieve all this fame and success on their own. They got the way they are now because of their musical likeliness to a successful band of an earlier time, and the fact that Sully Erna is currently denying any influence with Alice in Chains is what really is getting me pissed. |

Denying any influence?! He's come right out and said that AIC is one of the bands many influences. Along with Judas Preist, Metallica, Zeppelin etc. The members of Godsmack and Alice in Chains were actually good friends. And I have no idea as to why you brought MTV Cribs into this, anyone reading this can see that I never insinuated that the purpose of music was to get a big house and 8 cars, 7 of which you will never use.
And I see no reason why you think that people can't do something they love and make money with it at the same time. Your way of thinking is that if something is making money, it has lost its humble characteristics and has just become a marketing product. If that's what you think, I suggest maybe YOU get a change of heart.
And I don't need a huge-ass definiton as to what an argument is and why people do it. |

And I don't need a huge-ass definiton as to what an argument is and why people do it. Sully Erna has flip-flopped and said things like "I just don't hear it" in regards to AIC sound in his music. This more than likely, being a way to break away from attitudes such as the one I have towards them.
And I do believe I established that having a band will make you money in a basic sense with touring, merchandise, and album sales. The MTV Cribs lifestyle, a lifestyle that Godsmack members are living (which is why I brought it up), does not however, come mostly from album sales, merchandising, and touring. Let's say that kind of money will give Godsmack members the one car they need. However, the money that pays for the 7 cars that they won't ever use comes from paychecks from the Navy, the producers of the Scorpion King, Man On Fire, and Prince of Persia 2. You'd have to just love money to market yourself out that much.
Another thing I should probably make clear while we're getting into all of this... Bands so easily marketable, such as Godsmack, are in terms of instrumental ability, what I like to call "commercially simple". Such simple distorted rock guitar riffs are equal to that of what's put on a GoGurt commercial to fool 9-year-old kids into thinking its a, like, totally hip and extreme product, dude. TO THE MAX. The only difference here being is that a Godsmack riff is trying to fool kids into thinking its a, like, totally hip and extreme movie/video game/Navy, dude.
The day Bad Religion hit airwaves, I could not believe what I was hearing. This band managed to get away with a riff comprised of one single note. Out of all the bands I detest out of simplicity, Godsmack is the only one that comes to mind who has pulled that one off. Their music is just far too easy to swallow, and can register far too easily with the common American idiot brain. Thus why they are marketed so.
I don't mean to rip on your musical tastes, but I figured it may better help explain my loathing of commercialized music. It's not just commercialized, I also think it sucks.
The day I see King Diamond singing a McDonald's jingle while his band performs on an oversized Big Mac or something, you won't hear me complaining. In fact, I think I'd buy more Big Macs because such a commercial would exist. |

Gee, well that's not how I envisioned Godsmack at all >.<
I just like them for their angry straight-forward riffs and high tempered lyrics about kicking ass. As for AIC, i'll get right on stealing, I mean downloading some of their music.
I think we can conclude the argument with the words of the extremely famous, and ever-influencial Robert Plant:
What is and What Should Never Be :) |

I suppose I agree with you two as well. After all, being an argument dodging crybaby wuss surely has its benefits.
I merely jest. But honestly, I think heated disagreements such as this are what kept me going to this place, and I was upset to find during my occasional visits, that they are pretty much no longer going on. It made feel like I single-handedly started all trouble that occured in the forum for the duration of my membership. God, that makes me a troll with an unusually high lifespan.
So yeah. I'm not visiting. Or posting. Or replying. Just... trolling...
I think I need to be alone for a little while. |
