Japanese kids ARE going to try this at home and I know the effects won't be the same. :P
Awesome video, btw. Totally thought it just bounce the bullet back, but that's just my poor knowledge speaking. |

Even if it's the same, chances are that they'll get hurt. As seen in the video, the split bullet hardly deviates from its original direction.

They should try shooting at the flat surface of the katana. Maybe then the bullet might just bounce back if the steel for the blade is hard enough. |

BTW I was thinking the same.. probably the bullet might just bounce back with enough strength. |

| On the opposite end of the challenge, the was a Mythbusters episode where they tested whether or not "a sword can cut a machine gun in two." It couldn't. |

I KNEW IT!
Katanas >> 9mm handguns =D
Nah, just kidding. The only advantage the first has over the latter is that swords never need reloading and they're somewhat more difficult to use in close quarters.
Besides that, I don't think that anyone believes that a sword can have an edge (heh) over a guy with a pistol at medium/long range. Until you managed to get close enough to attack, you got killed three times. |

Bullets are made of softer metal than katanas are. I knew the outcome even before I saw the actual movie.
Of course, the one person who can fend off bullets by rapidly swinging your katana around will probably be the most successful warrior in any armed conflict.
Will get a bit difficult if he's attacked from multiple sides though... |

That's not a 9mm, it's a .45 ACP. Oh, and the sword eventually lost:

Can't beat Ma Deuce.
Heck, even if you have the astounding alacrity to actually cut bullets while wielding a Katana, that doesn't change the fact that you're going to have nasty little bullet fragments flying past the sword and into your face. |
