Well, let me start this off by saying two words, merged into one:
Un-fucking-real!
Now the question as to what era of Metallica this album would fall under is confusing, because its honestly got elements of everything in there (yes, that includes albums from Kill 'em All to And Justice for All) and even very minor elements from more recent albums like load/reload and st. anger...the beauty of that though is that it sounds like they just took everything good about their older material and canned anything that was bad, and the same goes for their newer stuff, and just sort of merged it all into one.
However, the album exploits much more then that. First of all, Kirk's solos (as cheesy and wah-ish as they are) are back, and I don't know about anyone else, but hearing his solos always get me pumped...probably cause he was initially the guitarist who made me want to pick up a guitar and just thrash. Every song has some sort of classic 'Tallica thrash solo in it, which is fucking awesome. However, the beauty doesn't end there:
Lars is back to playing like he should always play, the typical metal type beats, simple bass kick, snare, double bass, snare, etc. but sped up to shit. He's even got a fair share of straight double kick work, finally. The guitars gallop a lot (think Battery), and there are just straight thrash sections where I sweat from just listening to. (Think Dyers Eve on crack) Kirk and James are much more melodic with some of their riffs this time around, adding in some seriously complex harmonies (never thought they were capable of it) and some moments where you just wanna beat the living shit out of anything you see in front of you. As songwriters, their ability to write "metal" is definitely not gone. If you're ready for a vortex of pure destruction and fury of what raw Metal should be, then look no further.
And to top it all off, as if the classic nature of Metallica returning wasn't enough (or maybe the new direction for Metal in general?) You can pick up this cd for $12.99 plus taxes.
My suggestion: If you're a fan of any kind of metal, or if you're a fan of solely classic Metallica, or even an overall fan of their material (if you are, then you've probably already got the cd), GO and buy the cd. It's worth the 15 dollars that it'll cost you.
Oh, the Cd is 75 minutes long too |

I picked up Death Magnetic the first day it came out, I had high hopes and they WERE met :D
I love every song on the album, it's just that good! People say it sounds like the missing link between Justice and the Black Album, while I think it should be going between Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets.
Anyways, anyone who likes Metallica should definately pick the album up, it's NOTHING like St. Anger! Well, kinda in some places, but the songs are so good you just don't give a shit! And I was able to get mine for less than $11 bucks! |

Dude, yes! I love it. I love it so much. It's strange and interesting hearing Metallica change rythms in the middle of their songs though (like Tool or oldschool Mudvayne), but the songs are very kickass. I think they sound original, and I just can't compare it to anything else they've done. It has an older Metallica feel with a fresh and modern sound. And, it rocks hard. Been listening to it daily since I got it.
....
BTW, fun fact: I was the very first person to get it here (here being the mall). But still, first person. Oh, and they had a special sale. First day, 5 bucks an album. Yea, new Metallica for 5 dollars.
